City of ZHUHAI

Set up in 1979, Zhuhai was designated in 1980 as one of the four earliest special economic zones (SEZs) in China. Being 36 nautical miles away from Hong Kong to the east and adjacent to Macao to the south, Zhuhai is the only city in the Chinese mainland that is connected to both Hong Kong and Macao by land and bridge upon the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in 2018. As the second largest port city in China, Zhuhai boasts 8 national Category-1 ports, one of which is China’s largest land port--Gongbei Port.

 

Covering a land area of 1,725 square kilometers, Zhuhai has 2.47 million permanent residents in 2022. Zhuhai boasts abundant marine resources with 9,348-square kilometers sea area, 224.5-kilometer coastline as well as 262 islands. Known as “the City of a Hundred Islands”, Zhuhai is the largest coastal city with the most islands and longest coastline in Pearl River Delta.

 

Zhuhai surrounded by mountains and sea dotted with islands, Zhuhai enjoys an outstanding ecological environment with environmental indicators like air quality among the top in China. Zhuhai has earned numerous honors including “International Award for Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment” by the UN Habitat, “National Ecological Garden City”, “National Forest City” and ranked among “Top 10 Happiest Cities in China”.Zhuhai is the only city in China that has been nominated as one of the top 40 national tourism destinations for its overall cityscape. International events which have favored the city include the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China), China International Circus Festival, WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, ATP World Tour 250 Zhuhai Championships, International Beach Music Festival, and International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians. Islands, hot springs and golf are among the highlights of recreational tourism in the city.

 

The city has Zhuhai Aviation Industrial Park, the only one of its kind in Guangdong Province, which has attracted enterprises involved with general aviation manufacturing, industrial UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), aviation training, and new materials research. The park has been designated as National New Industrialization Demonstration Base for Aviation Industry. The China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition held in Zhuhai biennially is one of the top five international air shows with global influence.

 

Zhuhai is home to Zhuhai Airport, which is up to international standards, and Zhuhai Port, No.1 deepwater port in South China. With the completion of Guangzhou-Zhuhai Railway, Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Rail and Zhuhai Intracity Rail, Zhuhai is now the transportation hub connecting the Southwest of China and Hong Kong and Macao, and the regional central city in the Pearl River Delta.
